Between 2013 and 2015, I embarked on a series of monochromatic works that explore the dynamic potential of black-and-white compositions. “Illustrations” is a collection that utilizes mixed media, primarily markers and acrylics, to create bold contrasts and textures that emphasize the simplicity and complexity of minimalism.
The choice of monochrome is not just an aesthetic decision but a deliberate stripping away of distractions. Without the use of color, the viewer is left to focus on the form, texture, and emotion within each piece. These artworks explore the tension between light and shadow, positive and negative space, and how these elements interact to create depth and narrative.
Monochrome art has long been a powerful tool in visual storytelling, from the ancient ink wash paintings of East Asia to modern abstract art. In this series, I wanted to challenge the viewer to see beyond the absence of color and instead focus on the intricate layers of texture and contrast that tell a story all their own.
